‘They were waiting for Salammbô, and they would cry out for hours against her like dogs baying at the moon.’

After the long wars with Rome, Carthage finds itself unable to fulfill the payments promised to its army of mercenaries. Because of this, the mercenaries mutinied and started wreaking havoc on the Carthaginian realm. However, when the leader of the mercenaries saw the stunning Salammbô, his judgement became clouded and a tragedy for everyone involved was set into motion.

Set during the Truceless War that took place between the First and Second Punic War, Flaubert’s colourful and exotic historical epic continues to captivate readers to this day.
