‘Germany is proud of Luther as its greatest national hero. But while most nations are proud of their great men, Germany is proud of itself rather for producing Luther.’

German Philosophy and Politics was originally three lectures delivered by Dewey in February 1915. By then, World War I had already been going on for seven months and Dewey wanted to understand Germany’s entry into World War I by studying German philosophy and the effects it had on German politics. Despite being influenced by the opinions of his time, Dewey gave a comprehensive overview of German philosophy and politics from Luther to the early 20th century.

John Dewey was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer. He is one of the most prominent American scholars of the first half of the twentieth century.
