‘The conquerors passed through great trials, because all the land is the most mountainous and roughest that can be traversed on horseback, and it may be believed that, had it not been for the discord which existed between the people of Quito and those of Cuzco and its neighbourhood, the Spaniards would never have entered Cuzco.’

Pedro Sancho served as Francisco Pizarro’s secretary during Pizarro’s conquest of Inca-ruled Peru and wrote down an account of the conquest. Sancho’s original manuscript was lost but an Italian translation was preserved and was subsequently translated into many languages. The account now serves as a valuable historical document on the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire.

Pedro Sancho was a Spanish merchant and conquistador who served as secretary to Francisco Pizarro.
