‘Every night in the winter there is a ball or a party, where the polite circle meet, not to enjoy but to sweat each other; a great crowd crammed into twenty feet square gives a zest to the agréments of small talk and whist.’

Arthur Young toured the Kingdom of Ireland from 1776 to 1779 and this tour produced his widely read travel writing A Tour in Ireland. Young's account was very detailed and captured the culture and society of the Kingdom of Ireland as well as interesting statistical data on prices and production. This book is now an important historical document on the state of Ireland in the 18th century.

Arthur Young was an English agriculturist.
